-Summer Safety

Many of us look forward to the warm months so we can enjoy outdoor activities with our dogs! There are a variety of different activities to partake in including…

  • Walking

  • Hiking

  • Swimming

  • Playing Fetch

The best part is that our dogs LOVE the opportunity to spend more time by our side! It is important to remember though, that during the “dog days” of summer, our four legged friends can over-exert themselves and become dangerously overheated. Always be vigilant of your dog’s health and watch for any signs or change in behavior that could signal heat exhaustion, a precursor to heat stroke.

When playing outdoors or exercising, always…

  • Have Cold Water Readily Available

  • Find Places Where Shade Is Available

  • Make Sure To Take Many Breaks

If taking your dog out for a neighborhood walk, remember that hot pavement can burn a dog’s paws. Dogs love walks and being next to you, so they will likely keep going even if they are hurting. It is your responsibility to make sure the pavement is a safe temperature. To do this, put your bare palm on the ground- if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them! Lastly, NEVER leave your dog in the car. Even if they are only alone for a few minutes, a car’s interior temperature can climb to dangerous levels very quickly.

We love the summer time and we love to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather, but always keep in mind the safety of your dogs before having them tag along. When in doubt about the weather, leave them at home.

As A Final Reminder…

Always consult with your veterinarian to answer any and all questions regarding safety. Also, if your dog is experiencing signs of distress, speak with your veterinarian right away.
